The last arrow in the armoury of Harrowmere was the only one my grandmother would not let the smiths melt down. She kept it wrapped in oiled linen in a box of walnut, and when the siege came she unwrapped it on the battlements and laughed at the men who said it was too light to fly.

It was fletched with three grey feathers from a heron that had nested on our river wall for forty years. Near the nock the shaft bent into a single loop, made by a smith who had been trying to forge a sign for the word return. Nobody believed in the loop except my grandmother, and she only believed in it when the sky was dark.

On the last night I drew the great bow of the eastern gate myself, because my arms were the only ones left strong enough. The loop caught the moonlight. I let go and watched the arrow climb over the Ashen Pass, bend in the wind, and then curve back down towards the walls as though it had remembered something.

It struck the ground at my feet, point down, quivering. Up the pass, the enemy captain's tent had been pinned to its poles by the same shaft, his banner torn beneath it, and the morning brought the news that his men had gone home. I pulled the arrow from the earth, still warm, and hung it back on its nail above the hearth, where the loop could catch the firelight.
