Blue rose and rosary on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A large blue rose with soft shading across its petals forms the top of the design on the ankle and lower leg. Below it, black linework vines curl around a string of black beads that ends in a small black cross. The colour is concentrated in the rose, with the black outlines and beads providing contrast against the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The blue rose had been dyed overnight in a tin bath behind the generator wagon, and by the time the fair reached Spalding its petals had gone the colour of a bruised plum at the edges. Nobody on the ground believed in blue roses except Sallow, who ran the hook-a-duck stall and kept a string of black jet beads in the same tin where he counted the takings. You were sixteen that summer and paid in cups of tea to sweep the sawdust, so you saw everything that came out of that tin.

On the last Saturday the wind came off the fen hard enough to fold the awnings, and Sallow sat on an upturned crate with the rosary wound through his fingers, saying nothing. "My wife counted these on the big wheel every night it was lit," he said eventually. You asked him why he didn't sell them. He only tipped his head at the rose pinned to the canvas, its colour running in the rain like ink from a fountain pen.
That night you took the rose down, carried it to the caravan field and tied the beads around its stem with fishing line, the little cross hanging off the end like a plumb line. In the morning the wagons had gone south before light, towards Peterborough, and the step of Sallow's van was bare except for the rose, laid flat, and a single wet petal beside it that had dried blue as a vein.
