Dandelion and script on the foot
Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black script phrase runs across the foot beside a dandelion whose seed head is shaded in teal, pink and purple, with wisps of seeds drifting along the phrase. The first photo shows the phrase You are my sunshine and the second shows My only sunshine, both with smooth black lettering and fine stems. The bare foot rests on a textured beige carpet, with the wording and dandelion centred in each frame.

Mrs Hollis had sent the boy out at dawn to pick the last clocks off the verge behind the railway cutting, because her hands no longer managed the stalks. Tom came back with his cap full and his shoes soaked to the ankle. "They've all gone to seed," he said, as if that were a fault in the field.

She tipped the cap onto the kitchen table and began counting puffs. Seventeen, eighteen. Each one she blew for luck, the way her own mother had taught her in a Lincolnshire garden where the dandelions grew thicker than the grass. One breath for the time, two for the hour, and whatever seeds stayed on the stalk told you how long before somebody called you in for your tea.
Tom wanted to know why the seeds didn't just fall where the flower stood. She told him they had to go out into the world to find ground that wanted them. He wrote this down on the back of a feed bill, slowly, the way his letters came out, and pinned it above the sink beside the photograph of his father in his railway cap.
The week the weather turned, the boy stood on the back step with the empty cap and blew the last puff himself. It lifted over the yard, over the fence and the lane, and went off towards the station in a pale line that caught the sun all the way to the hedge. "Go on, then, my only sunshine," Mrs Hollis said. He never asked what she meant by it, but he kept the cap on the hook by the door for the rest of his life.
