Arrow with 'Greater is he that is in me' lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black arrow points upward through the centre of the design, with its shaft running between two columns of block capital letters reading GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME. The reference 1 John 4:4 sits small beneath the arrowhead's fletching. The linework is bold and flat with no shading, set on a pale cream background with faint ghosted marks behind it.

The typewriter jammed on the third word again, so Nell Garrod ran her thumb along the platen and listened to the bell go flat. GREATER was down, and IS, and HE, all in the heavy capitals her husband insisted on, because lower case, Ted used to say, made a man sound like he was apologising. The next word stuck. The bar came up with a clack and dropped back dead.

The card was for the Whitsun shoot at Hinton. Ted had made the arrow himself in the last week of his life, ash shaft straightened over the stove, three goose feathers bound with waxed thread, and he had drawn the verse down the length of it in black paint while the glue set. The vicar wanted it on a card tied to the nock, so people could read it while they waited for the bowmen to finish. Nell had promised she would type it properly. She had not yet decided what properly meant.
She worked the hairpin under the bar, freed it, and typed THAT, then IS, then IN, then ME, each letter striking the paper like a small hard knock on a door. Outside, the rain had cleared off the butts and the straw boss stood pale against the hedge. At the shoot the next morning she handed the arrow to the youngest archer in the village, a boy who held it as though it might still be warm. He drew, held a breath, and let it go. It rose, dipped, and struck the gold dead centre. The card fluttered once on the nock, and then it was simply there, in the wet grass, facing up.
