In the last week of August, Mabel Trusk carried a pot of pitch and a sack of iron nails up the hill to Harrow Orchard, because her father had lost his way twice that summer and would not be told. The old boundary stakes were ash, and the ash had gone soft at the ground. She meant to set new markers at the four corners so nobody else would walk into the wrong field.

She cut the arms from a sheet of oak her brother had left behind. Up the upright she stacked three triangles, the top one sharp as a cut apple, the two below wider, like something sitting down to rest. Across the middle she fixed two arrowheads, one pointing east and one west. She blackened every edge with a hot poker so the pitch would take the shadow into the grain. When she stood back the cross looked less like a sign than a thing that knew where it was going.
That night the wasps came to the cider press in a dark cloud, and her father went out with a lantern to see what the fuss was. He came back up the orchard path without once stumbling, walking straight between the trees as if someone had laid a rope along the ground. He stopped at the gate and counted the four points aloud, the way his mother used to count sheep.
In the morning Mabel went out to check the markers. The bottom triangles pointed at the house, and the arrowheads pointed at the gate, and the top point, which she had cut without thinking, pointed straight down at the kitchen door.
