A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paint had gone thick in the tin overnight, so Ruth stood it on the Rayburn and watched the lid as if it might owe her money. Outside, the yard was white to the gatepost and the ewes had turned their backs to the wind. Her father had taught her to letter with a squirrel-hair brush and a steady wrist, and he had taught her that script must look as though it was written in one breath, even when it took a whole afternoon.

Tom Ashby wanted the board over the stile redone before lambing. The old one read only GRACE in faded capitals, and the damp had lifted the R clean away. Ruth sketched it first on brown paper at the kitchen table, a cross made of words: faith running up the stem, peace and hope trailing off the bar, love and Christ below. She put arrowheads on the ends of the strokes because Tom's father had liked them, and because they pointed somewhere, which a farm sign ought to do.

The thaw came on the third day, dripping off the eaves. Ruth worked with the door propped open and her breath showing, and when she reached the big G at the centre she slowed, letting the loop turn back on itself the way her father's had. Tom came out with two mugs of tea and stood a long time without speaking.

"Same as before," he said at last. "Near enough." She didn't tell him she had copied the old loop from a photograph of the board, found at the back of a drawer. She only handed him the brush to hold while the varnish dried, and they watched the last word take the light.
