Astronaut helmet with lunar reflection on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A diptych of a realistic tattoo of an astronaut helmet on the upper arm, shown in a close-up and a wider view. The visor reflects two figures standing on a rust-toned lunar surface, with a shadowed foreground and a small American flag patch on the suit beside it. Smoky blue, teal, red and orange clouds fill the top of the design, and the shading is smooth and detailed across the helmet and suit.

The visor glass came back from the works in Rotherham with a hairline crack, and Dad spent three evenings at the kitchen table with a magnifier and a tin of Brasso before he admitted it could not be fixed. He had been a glass polisher at Harrowell's for thirty-one years, which meant nothing to anyone outside the trade, but to him a visor was a small sky you could hold. The commission had come from a props company making replicas for a school in Doncaster. They wanted the reflection to look real: two figures on a dusty plain, a flag stitched to the sleeve, and a smear of orange light behind them that he had painted on the inside of the glass with a sable brush.

I asked him what the light was. He said it was the dark part of the sky catching the sun from the wrong side, and that you only saw it if you stood still long enough. Then he carried the cracked pane out to the back garden and held it up against the hedge, where the beech trees bled blue and red through the glass, and for a minute the crack vanished into the reflection.
The school got a clean visor from a new batch in the end, and we never sent the broken one back. Dad kept it on the windowsill above the sink, where the morning light finds the two small figures on the glass and a trail of footprints running off towards the edge.
He still checks it every morning before the kettle goes on.
