It is a box, painted the blue of a Sunday jug, with a lantern on its roof and a small sign above the door that reads POLICE. Its door stood open when I came out with the lamp, and inside it was larger than the outside, which I will not describe further since you would only tell me to say my office. There was no one about. Only, on the step, lay a pocket watch on a broken chain, its dial scored with lines like a map of rivers.

I took it to my bench and spent three nights with the glass and the fine files. The face is not brass at all but something grey and cold, and the hands do not go round. Instead, when I breathed on the glass, a small orange light swam up from the centre like a coal in a grate, and behind it the whole sky turned, purple and then blue, clouds coming and going in slow spirals. I opened the back to find the works, and there was nothing there but more sky.

I am sending the watch to you with this letter. Do not wind it. Last night I did, out of pride, and the orange light went out, the bells of Lauds rang an hour before their time, and when I looked out the box was gone and the orchard was full of blossom.
