Prism and rainbow beam on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two photographs of the same forearm show a circular tattoo with a dark prism at its centre, with light entering one side and a rainbow fanning out across the right. The background inside the circle is a dark starry sky with a small orange glow at the lower edge. Solid black shading and smooth colour blends give the prism and the rainbow a bright, graphic finish.

Mabel had been told not to take the lens out of the workshop, so she waited until her father fell asleep over the accounts and then carried it under her coat to the edge of Hollin Wood. The glass was cold through the wool. It was heavier than she expected, a dark triangle of flint the size of a hen's egg, ground so true that when she held it to the lamp the wall behind it shivered into seven colours.

The village had gone quiet in the way it did before the harvest fair, when the men were at the Red Lion and the women had their shutters closed against the heat. Beyond the last stile the trees stood thick and black, and the sky above them was crowded with stars she had never bothered to count. She set the prism on a flat stone where the old boundary wall ran out, and tipped it until the lamplight caught its face.
The beam went in white and came out as a fan of colour that ran across the moss and up the bark of the nearest oak. Somewhere in the wood an owl stopped calling. Mabel laughed out loud, then covered her mouth, because the light was doing something she had no word for, and for once it seemed to be doing it for her alone.
When she got home her father was awake, lamp turned up, and she waited for the scolding. Instead he looked at the faint stain of colour still on her sleeve and asked her, very quietly, whether she had seen it reach the water. She had not. He said he had, once, the summer before she was born, and that he had never gone back.
