Sailor pin-up with ship and constellation

Neo-trad · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a sailor cap with an anchor badge is shown in profile, her face filled with a night sky, stars and a constellation above a sailing ship on calm water. The linework is bold and outlined, with smooth grey shading across the hair, cap and face and fine stippling in the sea. The composition is shown as a side-by-side pair of close-up photographs of the same tattoo on skin.

Mrs Pardoe had the ledger open on the hall table when Nell came in off the quay, wet to the knees and smelling of tar. "Room four has been empty since Tuesday," she said, "and the gentleman in room two wants his egg done properly or not at all."

Nell didn't answer. She went up the stairs two at a time to the attic where her father's things were stacked in tea chests, and she found the star chart under a tangle of rope. He had drawn the sky the way he saw it from the Kittiwake, every bright point joined by pencil, the names written small in the margins in his square hand. Cassiopeia was crooked. He had always said the queen was lying down on the job.

She carried the chart to the window and held it against the glass, where the evening was turning from green to ink. The harbour lamps were lit. A pale moon the size of a shilling hung over the water, and out past the breakwater a schooner was tacking slowly towards the light. Nell counted her masts twice before she trusted that she was seeing the right boat.

Mrs Pardoe's voice came up the stairwell. Nell folded the chart into her apron pocket, took the stairs down in one go, and went to see about the egg.
