Atlas holding a celestial sphere on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A muscular male figure kneels on a craggy rock while raising a large sphere overhead, with his arms straining upwards and his head bowed beneath the globe. The sphere is drawn with overlapping bands forming a star-like pattern, and the figure and rock are shaded in smooth greys with strong highlights and deep shadows. The tattoo runs down the upper arm from the shoulder, with a soft grey background behind the figure and the sphere.

Dear Ines,

The relief crew finally came up the spine of the station on Tuesday, so I can tell you properly about the sphere. For forty years the founders' armillary has hung in the hub, brass hoops bolted round the navigation core, and nobody has touched it since the reckoning drift. Yesterday the bearing on the north ring seized, and the whole thing began to sag towards the reactor cowl like a melon on a string. Mazur wanted to cut it loose. I climbed the lattice instead.
You know what it is up there. Five rings of cable crossing at the poles, with the old fuel reserve hung inside them. Someone has to take the weight by hand while the replacement bearing is seated. Mazur said that was madness and then held the lamp for me anyway, which is the most Mazur has ever said to me.
I held it for three hours and eleven minutes. My shoulders went first, then my knees against the gantry rail, and somewhere past the second hour I stopped feeling the weight as weight and started feeling it as a decision I had made and could not unmake. The old stories say the one who carries the sky is punished for it. I think they had it backwards. The sky is only heavy when you think you could put it down.
When the bolt finally took, I let go very slowly, the way you would lower a sleeping child. The rings turned once and stopped, and the light through them laid a star pattern across the hub floor that I expect to remember longer than most things. Come and see it when you can. Bring gloves.
