Atom and moon phases compass on thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A central atom with a nucleus and several elliptical orbits sits inside a compass rose marked N, E, S and W, with a small arrow at each cardinal point. Eight moon phases, from new to full, circle the design in a ring. The linework is thin and even, rendered in black ink with grey tones in the shading, on pale skin with camouflage fabric at the top edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The orrery stopped again on the third night of the waning moon, and Edith Crane heard it from the yard before she reached the workshop door. The wind through the reeds had changed its note. Her father had built the thing from a ship's chronometer and a bundle of copper wire, and he had always said it kept the sky honest, so long as somebody wound it every Sunday and never asked it a foolish question.

Her brother Tom had asked it a foolish question. He had taken the lugger out past the sandbanks on a Tuesday to chase a shoal of herring, and the sky had clouded over the way it does in the fens, all at once and from every side. Nobody on the quay could say which way the boat had gone. The compass rose painted on the wall gave them four letters and no comfort.

Edith sat down on the stool, lifted the small brass arrow from its pin and turned the moon wheel until the new moon faced the centre. The electron on its bent wire swung round its track and clicked against the nucleus. She had watched her father do this a hundred times and had never once understood why it mattered. Now she understood only that the needle would turn toward whatever the arithmetic pointed to, and that the arithmetic had to be done exactly, with the orbits counted and the phases read true.

She counted eight phases, then counted them again, and the needle drifted west and stopped. Before first light she had her coat on and the lantern lit. The tide was turning. Out past the bank, a single lamp was bobbing where no lamp should have been, and when Tom's voice came across the water, thin and furious and alive, she laughed so hard she nearly dropped the wheel.
