Atom, compass and moon phases on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A large black tattoo sits on the outer thigh, centred on an atom with three elliptical orbits and a dotted inner circle. The compass points N, E, S and W extend outward with arrowheads, and eight moon phases from new to full are arranged around the design. The linework is clean and bold, with the moon phases shaded in solid black and grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass gimbal had seized again by the time Mrs Pryce carried the lamp down to the workshop, so Tobias had already lifted the compass rose off its spindle and laid it on the green baize like a surgeon with a difficult patient. "The needle's sound," he said. "The pivot's walking. Something in the case keeps pulling it off true."

He kept a ledger of moons, eight small drawings in pencil, one for each phase from new to full, because the tide tables at Gannet Point drifted with them and so, he swore, did every needle in the county. Master Haskett had called the wire atom on the bench a toy for men in London who wanted to be photographed with their hands on something important. Tobias thought it the only honest object in the room. Three rings of copper circled a brass pip, and nobody had ever seen the pip. You simply trusted it was there because everything else would fall apart without it.

They found the lodestone at the heart of the pivot just before midnight, a black chip the size of a barley grain, and it had a dull mark scored across one face. Tobias recognised the notch. It was the same as the cut his brother made on the quarry wall the morning the Marguerite put out, a south-pointing arrow meant for a boy who would never read it. Tobias prised the stone free and set it in the palm of his hand.

He wound the case shut, turned the rose to the phase of the moon in the ledger, and let the needle settle. It did not swing to the north star. It swung to the dark quarter pressed against the window, and held there, steady as a bolted door.
