Attack helicopter and soldier on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a military attack helicopter in three-quarter view, with rotor blades sweeping across the top of the design. Beside and below it, a figure in a military-style jacket is rendered with soft shading and visible facial detail. The piece uses smooth grey tones and strong contrast on the helicopter's armour and glazing, with the figure fading toward the lower right edge of the frame.

You hear it before you see it, a flutter under the wind that the stone takes up and throws back at you. The lamp is already turning when the thing comes low over the headland, nose down, its rotors chewing the spray off the top of the swell. You have kept this light for nineteen years and you know every ship by its lantern, but nothing has ever come in under the cloud like this, grey as the rock, with no lights at all.

It hangs off the landing ledge, and a man in a cut-down jacket drops onto the wet concrete with his rifle held across his chest the way your father held a boathook. He does not look at the tower. He looks at the dark path up the cliff, then at you in the lit doorway, and he lifts one hand flat, the way you would calm a dog. Stay where you are, the gesture says. You have no intention of doing anything else. Your tea goes cold on the step.

Below the rotor wash, a dinghy is pushing up the slipway with two lads from the village and a torch you do not recognise, and the soldier goes down to them without a word. You understand, slowly, that they have come for the old radio room under the lamp, the one the Admiralty sealed in 1971 and nobody has opened since. The pilot keeps the machine hanging there, nose angled at the cliff, patient as a heron in shallow water.

When the cloud breaks, the helicopter lifts and the men are gone with it, and the sea goes back to being only sea. On the lamp room glass there is a fresh scrape where a rotor tip caught the rail. On the sill beside it lies a single brass key that was not there at dusk. You pick it up. It is still warm.
