Compass and map tattoo on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo on the thigh shows a compass rose with an ornate needle set over a faint grid map, with dashed route lines and a small mountain outline. Clouds fill the top and edges, and a shaded hand holds a scroll bearing cursive lettering at the lower right. The shading is soft and detailed in black and grey, with strong contrast across the compass and hand.

Nobody in Tallow Pass climbed to Greyfell after dark, though its walls had lost their roof a hundred years before and the wind had the rooms to itself. When Ansel Pell failed to come down from the high pasture with the ewes, his mother Hannah took her husband's brass compass from the drawer, along with the folded map he had drawn of every track in the valley, dashed where the paths ran through snow.

At the castle gate a stonemason sat on a block, sharpening a chisel that did not need it. He looked at the map and laughed softly. "Your man drew the roads where he wished them to be," he said. "Follow the clouds over the tooth of the mountain instead. The north in this country sits under the cloud, not on the paper." She asked how he knew such a thing. He tapped the rolled scroll across his knees, where the word the had been written in ink gone brown, and did not explain.
She followed the clouds. The needle swung and shivered as the ground rose, and where the dashed line on the map broke off into blank paper she kept walking, counting her steps as the mason had told her, forty from the well and then thirty more toward the sound of a bell. The bell turned out to be a sheep's, hung on a length of wire.
Ansel was in the old chapel with his back against a pillar and a lamb asleep across his boots. "I found the way down," he said, "but the path wouldn't stay where it was drawn." Hannah sat beside him and unfolded the map, and for once the needle and the paper agreed. The wandering lines ran straight off the edge of the sheet, into the part of the mountain nobody had ever surveyed, and she folded it away and let him lead.
