Maple leaf with forest scene on an arm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A large maple leaf fills the skin, with its veins drawn in fine lines. Inside the leaf, dark silhouettes of trees and a bird in flight form a landscape. Shades of yellow, orange and deep brown give the piece an autumnal palette with a sense of depth.

Hush now, the bride's aunt has the good chair, so you'll sit on the step like the rest of us. Yes, that one with the cracked tile. Listen close, because I'll not tell it twice before the fiddler starts. Up the hill from Carrow Mill stood a maple that had no business growing in a Yorkshire dale, and the whole village said so.

Old Hetty Brannock planted it the year her husband went to sea and never came back, and she made it one rule: every leaf that fell had to carry a bit of the forest with it, or it wasn't worth sweeping. So the leaves came down the colour of marmalade and rust, and when you held one up to the lamp you could see the firs crowding its veins and a single rook crossing from one edge to the other, going home.
Her grandson Tam was a fool for that rook. He wanted to catch it and keep it. On the morning of his wedding he climbed the maple in his good trousers, and the bird lifted off a branch, circled the church spire twice, and dropped a leaf into his palm. Hetty had never said the leaves were for brides, so Tam kept it in his waistcoat pocket all through the vows and didn't feel it once.
And when the bride's father asked where the ring was, Tam pulled out the leaf instead, and the old man held it up to the candle. The trees went dark across the veins, the rook spread its wings over the bride's cheek, and nobody in that room said a word until the fiddler started playing. Go on, pass it round. Mind the gravy.
