Autumn leaves across a lower back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A photograph of a lower back covered in a cluster of realistic autumn leaves, including a large maple-style leaf, smaller red and orange leaves, a green leaf at the lower left, and a single red leaf with a stem on the right. The leaves have soft shading, fine vein detail and highlights that give them depth. Warm reds, oranges, yellows and greens dominate, and the leaves are arranged to spread diagonally across the skin above the waistband of blue denim jeans.

Dear Mam, the Bramley trees at Hollins Farm have started turning already, a fortnight before anyone expected, and Mr Dawes says it is the drought that did it, the trees giving up on summer before summer has finished with them. You would have made me pick them up one by one for the scrapbook, and I did, out of habit, and then felt foolish standing in the mud with my pockets full of leaves.

The cider house smells of crushed apples now from dawn to dusk. Jenny from the packing shed says the first pressing will be ready for the Harvest Supper if the weather holds, and she has asked me to fetch the big enamel jug from the attic, the one with the chipped lip that Grandad used to drink from. I found it under a sack of old wire and a box of Christmas cards from 1979, and I sat on the attic boards for a good while reading the cards, which I had no business doing.
I am not coming home for the Supper. I know you will say the wages are not everything, and they are not, but there is a sort of weather in this valley that I did not expect to love and I find I want to see how it ends before I decide anything. The leaves will be down by the end of the month. Mr Dawes says they always are, that the trees keep nothing back that they cannot spare.
I will write Sunday. Keep the porch light on for me.
All my love, Eleanor
