Flaming skull on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A skull wrapped in orange and yellow flames and dark smoke fills the upper part of the forearm, with a grey, shaded mechanical part visible at the bottom of the design. The skull and smoke use soft shading and highlights for depth, while the flames are rendered in bright warm tones. The photograph shows the arm against a black chair and a pale cloth background.

The Leyland caught fire for the third time that month, and Ruth Gaskell was the only one left in the depot to see the skull rise out of the smoke. It came up through the open bonnet slowly, orange at the brow, its eye sockets full of light, as if something under the engine block had decided to look around. Dennis from days swore it was the exhaust. Ruth had kept the yard's books and its keys for twenty-six years and did not argue with things that stayed put.

She fetched the fire blanket and the brass lamp her father had carried on the Hull trawlers, then sat on an upturned crate with her knees drawn up. The flames climbed the piston housing like ivy up a wall. The skull watched her without moving until the heat reached the old wiring loom, and then its jaw dropped, slow as a tailgate, and a low sound rolled out of it, a gearbox sighing under a load it could not carry.
Ruth knew that note. It was the sound the winch had made the winter her father went over the side off Spurn, and the sound the Leyland had made the morning she took the job, when she turned the key and nothing caught. She had thought the bus was dying then. She understood now it had only been waiting for someone to sit still long enough to hear it.
She laid the blanket over the bonnet, pressed it flat with both hands, and counted to sixty. When she lifted it the skull had gone, leaving a grey smear of soot and a smell of hot brass. The next morning she drove the Leyland out along the Withernsea road and round the long bend without a single cough. She kept the blanket folded on the passenger seat after that, just in case.
