Avada Kedavra lettering on a finger
Lettering · Hand · Colour · Photo
A hand points towards the camera with the phrase avada kedavra tattooed in lettering along the upper side of the index finger. The lettering is in a single purple or violet ink with a hand-drawn, slightly uneven style. The soft white fabric and pale, low-contrast lighting keep the focus on the finger and the text.

Right, pull your chairs in, the ones of you whose knees still bend. You'll remember Ada Pennock, who sat by the radiator in Year Nine and copied every spell she could find into the back of her exercise book. Mr Hollis caught her one wet Tuesday with the words biroed across her knuckles, and he sent her out to the corridor, where the wall clock ticked loud enough to drown out the bell.

She wasn't wicked, and she never meant anyone harm. She just liked the way the words sat in the mouth, hard and bright, like a dropped coin. All that term she pointed at things. She pointed at the head boy's bicycle, at the tuck shop hatch, at a wasp that landed on her crisps. She'd mutter the words and flick her finger, and every time the wasp stayed exactly where it was, cleaning its legs, as if it had never heard of her.
At the leaving do, after the third sherry, she came over to my table and showed me the ink. Violet, a bit wobbly along the top of the finger, the same letters she'd been scratching at for years. I asked her why she'd bothered, and she said a finger is the only part of you that always points where you're looking, so you may as well make it say something true.
Then she turned, very slowly, and pointed across the hall at Mr Hollis, who was eighty-one and wheezing by the urn with a plate of sausage rolls. He looked up. Nothing happened. The urn kept gurgling, the sausage rolls stayed warm, and Ada laughed until she had to sit down, which was, as far as I know, the only spell any of us ever managed.
