Darling script across a finger
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is held palm towards the camera against a plain grey background. The word darling is written in thin black cursive lettering across the middle finger, and a small black cross sits on the fingertip of another finger. The ink is a single dark tone with clean, delicate linework, and the composition is tightly framed on the hand.

I had the word done in the back room of a tattooist's flat above the chippy in Fraserburgh, the autumn after my wife said it to me on the quay and I didn't answer her. Darling, she said, not kindly and not unkindly, the way you'd tell a gull to bugger off. I thought I'd need reminding. The cross on the fingertip is for Ewan Rennie, who went over the side off the Maggie Lind the year I was learning the knots, and who never once in his life called anyone darling.
We got the net in by half five, most of it, enough to pay the fuel. Dessie stood beside me on the wet deck, lit two cigarettes and handed me one without asking. The sun was coming up pale over the water and the ink on my middle finger looked black against the grey. I took the phone out of my oilskin, which is not allowed, typed the word the way it sits on my hand, and sent it before I could think better of it.
