Close-up of the words avada kedavra tattooed in dark blue lettering along an extended index finger, in a lettering style.

Avada kedavra lettering on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Colour · Photo

A hand with the index finger extended towards the right, photographed against a pale fabric backdrop. The words avada kedavra run along the length of the finger in a blackletter-influenced serif typeface, with a slightly irregular, hand-set look. The ink appears blue-purple against the skin, and the soft, even lighting keeps the composition simple and focused on the lettering.

Dear Ailsa,

The ferry didn't run again on Tuesday, so the whole of Eilean Mòr is sulking in the chandlery queue, and your Calum has been down on the slip every afternoon with his finger out. You'll have heard from your mother already. He has those words on his finger now, the ones from his books, and he shouts them at anything that annoys him. Last week it was the herring gull that had his pasty. He stood at the end of the pier, arm straight, and bellowed avada kedavra at it until the bird dropped the thing into the harbour and went off muttering.

Mrs Grieve from the post office said it was the finest curse she'd seen cast in forty years, though she also said the gull looked more embarrassed than dead. Yesterday I found him sitting on the bollard with his hand in his lap. I asked why he'd stopped. He said the gulls don't mind, they only fly off, and the only thing he has ever really wanted to make vanish is the ferry timetable. Then he went quiet and held his finger out towards the mainland, the way he did when he was small and wanted me to look at a boat.

I looked. There was nothing out there but grey water and the faint line of the hills, and he kept it pointed a long while anyway. This morning the gull was back on the bollard with a fresh crust in its beak, which it set down very carefully at his feet.

Love to Ian and the girls, Mam
