The big top had a tear in its roof the size of a dinner plate, and every drizzly afternoon Tobias Quill dragged the stepladder out to patch it with gaffer tape. Nobody paid to see the elephants any more. The crowds had thinned to a handful of pensioners and a dog that barked at the clowns. Pip, the youngest of the herd, still trotted into the ring each evening as if the stands were full.

On the last wet Tuesday of the season, Tobias found her alone in the sawdust during the empty matinee. She had a daisy curled in the tip of her trunk, picked from the strip of grass behind the lorries, and she was holding it out toward the rows of folding seats. Her ears flapped slowly, pleased with herself. 'You don't give a show to nobody,' Tobias told her, lowering himself onto a bale of hay. 'You give it to somebody.' Pip considered this, then unrolled her trunk and laid the flower gently on his knee.

The letter from the council came on Thursday. The field lease was not being renewed, and the lorries would roll out on Monday. Tobias read it twice at the caravan table, then fished the stub of an old ticket from the biscuit tin and tucked the daisy between its pages. It was foolish, he knew, since the petals were already browning at the edges.

On Monday morning the convoy crawled past the village green. Pip stood at the back of the last trailer with her trunk raised toward the empty field where the big top had been, as if there were still someone in the seats.
