Baby elephant holding a daisy
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon baby elephant sits and raises its trunk to hold a daisy with a long stem. The linework is dark and sketchy, with soft grey wash shading on the body and a pale lilac tint inside the ear. The elephant is centred on smooth skin, with the daisy rising to the upper right of the design.

The river had been brown for nine weeks when the calf came down out of the hills, walking as though the valley had been waiting for her. Nobody in Caddery Reach had seen an elephant before, and the gatekeeper, a man named Hobb Carrow, was sure she was a bad omen sent by the drought.

She sat down in the road outside the gate and would not move. The guards laughed, then grew tired of laughing, then brought her water in a barrel, which she drank with great courtesy. She asked for nothing except the king's daughter, Orla, who had not smiled since the wells began to fail. Each morning the calf raised her trunk and held out a single daisy on a long, bent stem, the only flower left on the slope above the town.
On the ninth day Orla walked out in her grey cloak to see why the road was blocked. The calf offered her the daisy. Orla said that flowers were no use to a thirsty kingdom, and the calf only turned her head towards the hills and waited. Orla thought about it for a long while, then sent two riders up the slope to dig where the daisies grew thickest. Under the roots they found a spring, choked with silt for longer than anyone could remember.
Every spring after that, the well-keepers of Caddery Reach carved a daisy into the stone above the gate, and beside it a small seated elephant with its trunk in the air. The king's name was never carved anywhere. The children of the town still bring flowers to the gate before they bring anything else, and the calf, who never did learn to speak, takes each one gravely and tucks it behind her ear.
