Elephant and forget-me-nots on a lower leg
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon elephant with a raised trunk is drawn in black outline with grey shading on the ear and body. Clusters of blue five-petalled flowers with yellow centres and small green leaves sit beside and below the elephant. The design is placed on the outer side of a lower leg, above a white lace-trimmed shoe, with the elephant facing right.

"She never forgot a face," he said, turning his glass. "Nor a grudge, nor a bucket of water. Elephants don't forget, that's the saying, and it's a terrible thing to live up to."
Then the door banged open and a woman came in with snow in her hair and a carrier bag clutched to her chest. She asked for the room at the top of the stairs, the one with the blue-painted sill, and when I asked how she knew about it she only said her mother had stayed there the winter of 1989 and left something behind.
I found it tucked behind the window frame: a little tin of forget-me-nots pressed flat as paper, and a note in a child's careful capitals. DON'T LET DOROTHY FORGET ME. Mr Ansell read it over my shoulder and went very quiet. The elephant had belonged to a girl whose father drove the big top's water wagon, he said, and the girl had left in a hurry the spring the circus folded. He had kept the brass name tag from Dorothy's harness ever since, and he took it out now and set it on the table between us, face up, where the lamplight could find it.
