Baby elephant with coloured spray on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A black outline drawing of a small seated elephant with its trunk raised, spraying curling swirls and dots in teal and red. The linework is fine and even, with the elephant left unshaded and the colour confined to the spray. The tattoo sits on the side of the torso against plain skin, with grey fabric at the top edge of the frame.

Pim had been the smallest calf at the water hole since the rains went east, and by the dry month she had learned to stand where the older ones could not see her. The fig tree had gone grey. Even the weaver birds had given up on the reeds. What she had instead was a habit of lifting her trunk toward the sky, as if something up there might be caught.

On the morning the paint cart rattled through the gap in the thorn fence, Auntie Okonedo was driving it, with a crate of pots that had split in the heat. Red had leaked across the floorboards and teal had pooled in the dust. Pim stepped forward, curious, and the old woman laughed and told her that a trunk is a brush for anyone patient enough. She dipped the tip of the calf's trunk into the spilled colour and showed her how to flick it upward with a little twist at the end.
Pim practised all afternoon. Ribbons of red and teal curled into the dry air and hung there, and dots drifted after them like seeds that had forgotten the ground. The herd gathered at the edge of the fence. The children clapped. Nothing that fell could be drunk, but for a while the sky above the water hole looked as though it had remembered something it had been missing.
When the calf was grown she still sprayed colour over the cracked mud each dry season, and the older elephants said it did no good at all. The birds came anyway to see what the fuss was about, and they stayed to drink, and by the time the rains returned nobody could say whether the colour had called them or they had simply been waiting for something to look at.
