Baby elephant spraying a galaxy

Mixed · Flash

A small cartoon baby elephant sits on a line of ground, facing left, with its trunk raised and curled upwards. From the trunk a splash of blue, purple and pink colour bursts out, speckled with white star marks. The elephant is drawn in fine black outline with soft grey shading and a pink ear, set alone in the centre of a plain white sheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pell had been told three times to keep the calf out of the pigment shed, and the calf had been in it four times that morning. Now it stood on the threshold with its small grey trunk lifted high, blue dust clinging to its eyelashes like frost, and it looked at Pell as though the mess had been her idea.

The shed belonged to Old Hesper, who ground lapis, malachite and the rose-red earth that the temple painters bought by the bucket. The night before, the priests had asked for a sky to go over the dedication wall, and Hesper had spent a fortnight getting the colours right. Nobody had thought about the calf. It had found the sieve of crushed lapis, tipped it over, and then, in the manner of elephants everywhere, had taken a deep breath and blown.

Pell expected shouting. Instead the dust hung in the lamplight, turning from blue to violet to a rosy pink where the red earth had mixed in, and it drifted out through the doorway like a river of night. Tiny bright flecks caught the light and stayed where they landed on the courtyard stones. Hesper came round the corner, saw the cloud over the courtyard, and sat down heavily on an upturned jar.

"Well," she said at last, wiping her hands on her apron. "That is the sky sorted, then. Fetch the brushes, Pell, and let the calf finish the stars."
