Colour · Flash
A pencil sketch of a dreamcatcher hoop with a woven web, beaded strands and feathers hanging below. The linework is fine and sketchy, with soft shading on the feathers and hoop. Colour is applied with coloured pencils in purple, pink, yellow and blue, with the beads picked out in pink and purple.

The frost had got into the top field again by the time Dad sent me up with the feed, and I was still thinking about the hoop when I came back down. Mum had made it the summer before she went into hospital, bending a length of green willow into a ring and wrapping it in brown twine until it looked like an old barrel hoop. The web inside was her doing too, knotted tight with a bodkin, and she'd strung it with glass beads from the tin on the dresser, purple and pink, the ones she said were too good to waste on anything but a proper job.

Nobody bought the feathers. Ewan from the poultry sheds brought me a bag of pheasant and jay tail and said I could have what I wanted off the sorting table. I took the long ones, dipped the quills in cold tea to tone them, then coloured the vanes with a box of pencils my sister had left behind at Easter. Purple went on the first one, then pink, then a dirty yellow for the one that always drooped, and a blue that would never quite sit where I wanted it.
Mum never liked the yellow. She said it looked like a warning. I hung it anyway, off the kitchen beam where the light from the range catches the beads and throws little coins of colour across the flagstones. The first night the wind came down off the moor, the feathers all moved together, as if they were listening for something out past the yard.
Dad stood under it with his cap in his hands the morning after the funeral and didn't say a word. Then he reached up and turned the yellow one so it faced the window.
