The last ferry had gone without Dora Pell, which meant the tally of falling stars would have to wait until morning. She sat on the sea wall at Skerrow with her boots full of salt water and counted instead. Seven by eleven o'clock. The big one had come over the chapel roof like a spoonful of spilt milk, leaving a pink ribbon that hung in the air long after its light had gone out.

Her grandfather had kept the lamp on the north point for forty years and had a rule about the sky: you did not wish on a star that was already falling, because by the time you had the words in order it had finished its business and gone home. Dora thought this was nonsense. She kept a biscuit tin under the post office counter, full of folded wishes written on the backs of stamp receipts, and she had never once been sure which of them were hers.
A blue trail curled down over the water, slower than the others, and broke apart in a fizz of violet above the buoy. Out past it the fishing boats were coming home without lamps, and the beam from the point swept over them the way it always had. Dora took the last receipt from her coat pocket, wrote nothing on it, and pressed it into the wet sand where the spark had landed.
By morning the tide had taken it. The sky over Skerrow was clean and empty, though high up past the weather there were still faint grey strokes where the stars had been, as if someone had been sketching the night and had not yet decided where to finish.
