Forever script with bold letter on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot with denim shorts at the top of the frame shows a solid black ornamental letter with a looping, calligraphic stroke. The word Forever runs diagonally beside it in thin, cursive black linework. The ink is entirely black against pale skin, and the composition is close and angled, with painted orange toenails at the bottom edge against a dark background.

The bell at Saltcote had rung twice before Maud Haddow remembered she had left the ink in the boathouse. The tide was already sliding over the bottom step of the Mother's Gate, and the mark still had to go on the stone, or the ferry would not know which arch to steer for when the fog came down. She sent the boy running with a lamp and turned back to the wall.

The letter was an R, or it was meant to be, the stem swelling at the top and the leg sweeping down and round like a rope being coiled. Her grandmother had cut it that way, and nobody in Saltcote had ever asked why a sea-gate needed a letter at all. Only the thin word beside it was new. Maud had written it herself the winter Tam went out past the buoy and did not come in. She kept the hand small and loose, the way the old copybooks showed it, so the wet would not swallow it first.
The boy came back with the lamp guttering and the ink pot wrapped in his shirt. He held the light while she dipped the brush, and asked what the thin word said. Forever, she told him. It means the thing that does not go under. He frowned at the water and said the big letter was the only part anyone could read from a boat, so why not paint that larger and leave the rest. She laughed, because he was right, and the bold stroke had always been the part that carried.
When the fog lifted at dawn the R stood black and clean above the waterline, and the thin word beneath it had gone grey with salt. A ferry came in along the line it had been told to follow. Maud stood on the step with the empty pot and felt the cold come up through her boots, and she thought the boy had got it right: people steered by the loud thing, and the quiet thing was what they carried home.
