Ball of yarn and knitting needles on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a ball of yarn with two knitting needles poking out of the top, with a loose strand trailing from its base. The design uses clean, thin outlines with light grey shading across the wool to suggest texture and volume. It is shown in close framing on a pale lower leg above a black sock, against a beige carpet.

Mrs Edith Pardoe had been knitting the same grey jumper since the spring, and by August the ball in her basket had grown small enough to rattle. She sat on the step of number nine, Tanner Row, needles pushed through the wool the way she always left them, counting stitches under her breath while the milk cart clattered past towards Lower Ashby.

The trouble started when the wool ran out at the cuff. She found that a loose strand had worked free of the ball and gone off down the step, across the cobbles and under the gate of number eleven, where Walter Cole kept his bees and his bad temper. She followed it, of course. Nobody in Tanner Row had ever left a thread unpulled.

Walter was on his knees among the runner beans with a trowel in his fist. The strand ended in a knot tied round the handle of his spade. He looked at the wool, then at her, and admitted he'd found it snagged on the fence that morning and had meant to bring it back, only she had been so fierce about her needles that he'd never dared. She untied it without a word. Between them they wound three yards back onto the ball, and the thing that had been stuck for a month came loose all at once.

That evening she cast on the cuff again with the lamp pulled close. When she drew the first row tight she felt a faint answering tug from across the lane, as though someone at the far window was holding on to the other end.
