Maren kept the presses going because the council paid the rent on the building, and because the old machines hummed when she oiled them, which was the closest thing to company she had after the shift bells stopped.

Her grandmother had left her a type case in the back room, its drawers labelled in faded pencil. Most held letters nobody needed any more. Full stops had gone first, then commas, once the speaking engines learned to breathe between words for themselves. The semicolon drawer was the one Maren had never opened.

Inside, under a folded sheet of vellum, lay a single sort: a semicolon cast in grey metal, its comma set beneath the dot, both fine-cut with grooves like the veins of a fallen leaf. The note tucked beside it said her grandmother had engraved them by hand so that a reader could be held still for a moment while deciding whether the sentence would go on.

Maren locked the sort into a composing stick that evening and printed one line for the district notice board: the water is back on, but wait. The ink went down thick and black. By morning the first passer-by had stopped in front of the board, tilted their head, and read past the mark into the next line, and Maren watched from the doorway until they were gone.
