Geometric arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow runs vertically across the skin, with its fletching at the top and its tip at the bottom, and two open circles sit along its shaft. Triangles, short horizontal bars and dots are added along the line, all drawn in thin black linework with solid fills on some shapes. The ink is black only, and the tattoo is centred on a plain, pale area of skin against a dark, out-of-focus background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Her grandfather had been dead nine years when the county letter arrived, but his field book was still in the cupboard under the stairs, and it was the book Ruth read first, standing in the hall with her coat still on. Every page was ruled in fine pencil. Two circles, drawn with a brass compass, sat at either end of a line across the moor above Calder Hollow, and between them he had marked a dot, a triangle, a short bar and a dot again, the way a man notes the places he has stood.

The council wanted the old walls cleared for a road. Ruth drove up on a grey Tuesday with the book on the passenger seat and found the first circle without trouble, a ring of footings no higher than a boot. The second took an hour. Her grandfather had sighted it from the first along a line of rowan posts that had long since rotted, so she walked the bearing by feel, counting paces, until the heather gave way to a rectangle of flat grey slate with a rusted iron pin set in its centre.
She knelt and brushed the moss off. Beneath it someone had scratched a small arrow, its head pointing back the way she had come, down toward the valley where the road would go. Under the arrow, in her grandfather's careful hand, were the date of a survey he never finished and a single word: wait.
She stayed until the light went. Then she worked the pin loose, wrapped it in her scarf, and walked the line back down to the car, counting her steps the whole way.
