The cook had been dead three winters when the girl first danced on the broken keep at Hollin Scar, and nobody in the valley thought to stop her, because the snow lay too deep for anyone to climb up and see what she was doing.

She had no music but the wind through the arrow slits. She lifted one arm and swung one leg back until her body made a single line, like a bow drawn across the sky. The moon caught her and threw her shadow onto the north wall, black and flat and steady. The shepherds who came up at dawn said it was the only thing left of the castle that still knew how to stand straight.

Tobias the mason was paid to pull the north wall down before spring. He climbed up one morning with a ladder and a bucket of lime to paint the shadow over. Every night she danced and every morning the shadow was still there, pressed into the stone where lime would not take. On the last dusk he climbed up to find the keep empty, the girl gone down the far side of the hill, and only her outline left behind, one leg lifted and one arm raised.

He set the ladder against the wall and went home without the lime. The wall stood until the roof fell in, and the village children still stand below it in the snow, copying the pose with their arms. The bucket stayed by the gate, and the lime went hard in it.
