Tribal frog design
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a stylised frog with raised arms, splayed toes and bent legs, built from bold black tapering lines. A spiral sits in the centre of the body, and the thick and thin strokes give it a tribal character. It is solid black on white with no shading, and the figure is centred and fills the tall frame.

Sit closer, you, where the wind can't get under your coat. Good. Now hush, because this is the part the children always talk over. There was a frog at Carrow Keep, and he was not the green sort that sits in ditches waiting for rain. He was black as a wet slate, with arms raised like a man giving up an argument, and wherever he went the stones of the old wall remembered his toes.

The Lord of Carrow kept the well-water under lock, because in the bottom of that well lay the spiral of the moon. Every bright night it came up through the dark like a silver snail, and the Lord had it drawn up in a bucket and poured into his bath so he would never grow old. The frog watched this from the ivy for seven winters. He counted the bucket's creak, the bolt's click, the ladle's knock on the stone rim.
On the eighth winter the frog climbed. Up the wall, one toe at a time, past the arrow slits where the wind hummed, up the spiral stair that turns the wrong way for anyone with a sword in his right hand. At the top the Lord sat in his tub of moonlight, grey and soft as a boiled pear. The frog did not speak. He only raised his arms, the way frogs do when they have decided something, and the water in the tub began to turn.
Down he went, carrying the spiral in his cupped hands, and dropped it back in the well where it belonged. The moon went up the shaft to its own sky. The Lord woke to a bath gone cold and his own face staring up at him, older than he had thought. If you lean over Carrow's well on a still night you will see a coil of light turning slowly at the bottom, and if you are patient the frog will climb out and sit on the rim, waiting for you to go home.
