Swallow in flight on skin
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A single swallow is shown in side view, mid-flight, with its wings swept upward and a forked tail trailing behind. The wings are rendered in fine, feathered strokes that fade toward the tips, while the body is filled with soft, dark shading. The tattoo sits on plain, pale skin with a neutral grey background and no other elements in frame.

The nest under the ambulance bay canopy had been there longer than most of the nurses, and Maureen wanted it knocked down before the summer rota started. I told her the birds came back every April to the same mud cup, and that a hospital could find room for one more thing that wanted to be somewhere. She looked at me over her glasses the way she looks at a drip that has stopped.

By three in the morning the ward was quiet except for the pumps. I took a tea out to the bay and found one swallow sitting on the lip of the nest instead of the usual pair, its tail forked like a pair of scissors left open. The other had gone. Maybe it had already started south, or maybe it had gone under a lorry on the bypass. I did not know which I was hoping for.
I stood with the tea going cold and watched it. Every few minutes it lifted, swung out over the car park lamps, and dropped back, as if it were measuring the drop. Ambulance doors sighed open behind me and a paramedic called for a trolley. When I turned back the bird was gone, the nest was empty, and the sky over the car park had gone the grey of wet slate.
At handover I told Maureen the nest was staying. She didn't argue. Driving home along the coast road at seven, I looked up and there they were, two dark shapes low over the hedge, cutting left and right across the verge as if stitching the morning together.
