Right, sit down, the lot of you, and mind the lift, it's still not working. Nobody on the fourteenth floor saw her come up. Gran Ivy always said she came in through the broken pane in the stairwell, blown off the top of the church spire by a bad November wind, and her wings had gone to rags, grey as an old dishcloth.

The children on that landing were the Okafor twins and a boy called Rory Dunn who ate paper. They made her a bed in a shoebox lined with tissue and gave her a torch with the batteries going. Every night they fed her crumbs of Battenberg and sang her the bus numbers, because she said a fairy could only fly on tunes. Each evening her arm reached out toward the window, and her leg curled up behind her the way a cat's tail does when it means to go.

On the last night of November the wind dropped flat. Rory unlatched the window onto the car park lights, and she stood on the sill and shook out her wings. They came up long and silver, curling at the tips like fern shoots. She flicked stars from her fingers, a whole flurry of them, and they hung in the cold air above the bins before she rose over the flats toward the spire. The stars stayed stuck to the glass for a week. The caretaker scraped at them with a razor blade, but they came back on every night the wind blew hard enough to remember her.
