Balloon house and script on the calf
Lettering · Calf · Colour · Photo
A yellow house with a red chimney is carried upward by a large bunch of multicoloured balloons, with script reading Adventure is out there... arched across the top. The linework is clean and bold, and the house has soft shading on its walls and roof. Pastel blues, pinks and greens fill the sky and balloons, giving the piece a bright, full-colour finish.

Ada Pell had been trying to get the kettle to boil for twenty minutes when the first balloon bumped against the kitchen window. It was red, and it squeaked on the glass like a wet finger, and behind it came a whole crowd of them, blue and green and the colour of apricots, tugging at the gutters as if the farmhouse were a boat they meant to moor.

Her brother Tom was out at the lambing shed in a frost that had skinned the yard white. She went out in her wellies and his old waxed coat and found the balloons had hold of the red brick chimney, which had been leaking smoke since Michaelmas. They lifted the whole house a hand's width off its footings with a groan of timber. The fair seller's cart stood empty at the gate, its tailboard open, a sign on its side reading Hooray for Winter Fairs in paint gone pale as milk.
She fetched the shears from the dresser drawer and stood at the foot of the stairs with them in her hand. The house gave a lurch, and the floorboards tilted towards the front door, and the kettle, which she had carried up without thinking, began to sing. Below her the hedges shrank into the frost, and the lane unrolled like a ribbon. She put the shears down.
Tom came back at dusk to find the yard empty, the chimney still smoking, and a note pinned to the gatepost in her careful hand: Lambs are in the barn. Back when the wind turns. Adventure is out there. He read it twice, then went to see to the ewes, because somebody had to, and because she had left him the good tea.
