The removal men took the settee this morning, and they had the cheek to ask whether the chimney still drew. I told them it had drawn for forty-one years and could manage one more Tuesday. You'll laugh, but after they'd gone I stood in the front room and listened to the house tick, like it was cooling down.
I've left the teal paint on the windowsill for you, the tin with the dent in the lid. Your grandad chose that colour off a card at the hardware shop on Market Street in 1978, because it was the only one that didn't look like custard or mud. He painted the front door yellow to match the roof, and the roof never quite matched anything. Mrs Okafor next door said we were mad. She painted her own door purple in the end, so who was mad?
The flowers in the front bed are the ones Edie planted the spring she was poorly, pink and red and far too bold for this street. Leave them be. Water them on Thursdays and they'll forgive you for going south.
The key is under the pot by the step, though you know that. The new people are the Lindqvists. They have a little boy who draws on the pavement in chalk, and I told them the sign over the door stays up, whatever they think of it. It says what it says. Some things are worth a bit of paint.
