Colour tattoo on a thigh showing a house lifted by a bunch of balloons above a banner reading Adventure is out there, shown from two angles.

Balloons and house with banner on thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a yellow and blue house with a grey roof, lifted into the sky by a large cluster of multicoloured balloons, with a ribbon banner reading ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE across the top. The linework is clean and the shading is soft, with smooth gradients across the balloons and light blue cloud wash behind the house. Two photographs of the same thigh sit side by side on a wooden floor, with the tattoo centred in each.

Sit closer, the fire is low and the wind is at the door, so you'll have to lean in to hear me. You know the house on the cliff above Scarrow Bay? Grey slate roof, yellow front, a weathervane shaped like a gull that never once turned to face the weather. Old Mairi lived in it with three goats and a drawer full of letters she had never opened. Every morning she walked down to the harbour to be told no boat was going anywhere, and every evening she climbed back up the path with her shawl pulled tight.

One spring a gale came off the sea and tore through the fair at Kirkbride. It dragged a whole sky's worth of balloons out of the sideshow tent, red and green and a blue so bright it hurt your eyes. They came over the headland at dusk, snagged on the chimney, and lifted that little house clean off its footings like a lid off a pot. The goats bleated. The gull spun round at last. Mairi held on to the banner the sign-painter had stitched along the front, the one that read ADVENTURE IS OUT THERE, and she did not let go.

She could have come down in the bay. Instead she steered the house by leaning her weight from one end to the other, and the balloons carried her south over grey water toward Inchmore, where nobody on the mainland had ever seen a light. By morning the goats were eating thistles on a stranger's shore and Mairi was boiling kettles on a stove that rocked like a cradle.

She opened the letters that night, one by one, and used every page to light the fire. If you ever see a yellow house drifting over Scarrow with its chimney trailing colour, don't wave. She's busy, and she's finally where she wanted to be.
