Fine line tattoo of a pastel house lifted by coloured balloons, with the words Adventure is out there above it, on a person's upper back.

Balloon house with Adventure is out there

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A small house with a pitched roof is lifted into the air by a bunch of coloured balloons in pink, blue, yellow and green. The phrase Adventure is out there followed by an ellipsis sits in thin black lettering above the house. The design is centred on the upper back, with a black bra strap visible at the right edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The balloons had been bought at the fair in Stourport for a penny each, and by the time Mabel Crouch had tied the last one to the chimney of the cabin, the barge was already drifting past the lock gates. Her husband Eli said nothing about it. He had worked the river for forty years and knew better than to argue with a woman holding a fistful of string.

The cabin was painted pink and yellow, with a green door that Eli had never liked. Mabel always said a house should look as if it might want to go somewhere. Through the window they watched the water fall away beneath them, the willows shrinking to hedgerow and the towpath becoming a thread. Their dog Biscuit barked at a heron that did not care. Eli went below and came back with two cups of tea, which he carried carefully, because the floor had begun to tilt.

They drifted over Bewdley at dusk, past the church spire and the cricket field, where a boy lifted his cap and shouted something about a flying pig. Mabel waved back. Somewhere above the Wyre Forest the wind changed and the balloons turned slowly, pink, blue, yellow and green, like a row of sweets on a string. Eli took out his pipe and found he had no wish to light it.

Near dawn they came down gently on a hillside in Wales, on a patch of grass so soft the chimney barely scraped. Mabel untied the balloons one by one and let them go, and the cabin settled with a sigh. She looked back at the little house sitting on the hill and said, well, that's the far side of the river. Eli asked where they would go next. She said the map was in the drawer, and he should look for the bit with the blank edges.
