Winnie the Pooh with a red balloon on the back
Back · Colour · Photo
A cartoon Winnie the Pooh holds a large red balloon string while floating past pale blue clouds and small bees. A quote in black script above reads 'As soon as I saw you I knew an adventure was about to happen' with '-Winnie the Pooh' beneath it. Yellow, red and blue colour sits over thin black outlines, with the design spread across the upper back.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, before the buffet gets to the sausage rolls. I've told this one at every reunion since 1979, and I'll tell it once more for those who skipped the speeches. There was a bear in our wood who owned one red balloon and not a single idea what to do with it. He'd bought it at the summer fête for two pence off a man with a moustache like a yard brush, and he carried it everywhere, string wound twice round his paw.

One grey Tuesday the wind got under it. Up he went, past the chimney pots, past clouds the colour of a swimming baths, while down in the hedge the bees were going about their dreadful business. Mrs Ellery from number nine shouted that he'd be blown clean to Scarborough. He shouted back that Scarborough sounded splendid, and did they keep honey there, and then he was over the church roof with his feet dangling like a man who'd missed the last bus.
Nobody went after him. The boy who'd been holding the string stood in the lane with his hands in his pockets, and I've always thought that was the bravest thing anyone did that year. He didn't cry. He went home for his tea. The next morning the balloon was tied to the school gate with a bow, and the bear was sitting underneath it, looking pleased with himself, as if he'd always meant to come back the long way round.
So look at your name badges. Half of you have forgotten your own names, and the other half have forgotten why you wrote them on. Go on, find the boy you used to be. He's by the crisps, probably. Mind the string.
