Late August in the cider orchard at Lower Hope Farm, and Nell Ashby had been up the ladder since six, tying back the Discovery branches before the wasps got to the windfalls. Her father's secateurs were blunt. She kept meaning to take them to the grinder in Ledbury. Below her, Tom Greaves leaned on the gate with a flask in one hand and a letter he had not yet opened in the other.

The letter was from his brother in Leeds, the third in a month, each one thinner than the last. Tom had never been good with words. Nell had watched him read the first two standing up, folding them into quarters and pushing them into his back pocket as if they might go off. "Go on, then," she called down. "Open it or feed it to the hens."

He opened it. Inside was a photograph of a boy with a jam jar and a butterfly net, sunburnt across the nose, and on the back, in biro, a single line: tell him he doesn't have to be the sensible one. Tom laughed, a short bark, and then stopped laughing. Nell came down the ladder, wiped her hands on her jeans and took the photograph from him by its edges.

She studied the boy for a while, then handed it back. Tom folded it into the letter and the letter into his pocket. Nell climbed up again without a word. When she came down at dusk, a red admiral had settled on Tom's shoulder, opening and closing its wings in the last of the light, and neither of them moved until it was ready to leave.
