Banknotes and cannabis on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A rolled stack of banknotes bound with a red elastic band sits at the centre of the forearm, with cannabis leaves and buds spilling over it. The shading is soft and detailed, with strong highlights on the paper money and dense greens on the leaves. Colour ink is used for the red band and greens, while the notes are rendered in greys and browns, and the design fills the forearm up towards the wrist.

Mr Haskett paid the hemp cutters on Saturdays, out of the back of the feed store, and by noon the counter was buried under bundles. He counted in fives, licked his thumb, and rolled each stack tight before snapping a red rubber band around it, because the bank in Carrow sent its bands in red and nobody else in the county had any.

I kept the ledger. I was nineteen and wore a pencil behind each ear. The green leaves came in on the wagons every morning, piled higher than the mules, and the men who cut them smelled of sap and sun. Haskett said money and hemp were the same crop in the end: both came out of the ground and both went round in the same hands. I didn't understand him until the Saturday the bundle for the Ruiz boys came up short by forty dollars.
He didn't shout. He looked at the ledger, then at me, then pushed the stack across the wood. "Find it," he said. I went through every band twice. In the bottom of the tin, under a torn receipt, I found a single dollar folded small inside an empty seed packet, the crease still sharp. Somebody had been paying himself out of the crop and forgetting to write it down.
I wrapped the forty dollars in a fresh band myself, pressed my thumb flat on the paper, and carried it up the road to the Ruiz kitchen before supper. Ana took it without a word. I walked home with the red rubber still stuck to my fingers, and I counted every step.
