Floral mandala full sleeve on an arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The sleeve covers the upper arm and forearm with large peony-like flowers, layered mandala rosettes and small red starburst accents. The shading is mostly soft grey and black, with yellowish tones on the petals and fine dotted detail in the lower mandalas. The arm rests across a black leather bench on a grey floor, with a dark shirt visible at the top edge.

Tomas had driven the Mirrow road for nineteen years and never once stopped at the petrol station at Kessel Wells, because the pump there was older than the town and the woman who ran it sold only tinned peaches and coiled rope. This morning the tyre went flat a mile past her shack, and he walked back with the jack under one arm, cursing the grit that got into everything.

Ada Quill was painting the side wall of the shack when he arrived. It was not a sign but a flower the size of a cartwheel, peony petals layered like the pages of a closed book, shaded in ochre and a grey that looked almost blue in the glare. Around it she had ringed rosettes, circles inside circles, and at their points she had flicked a red brush hard, so that small starbursts seemed to have shot off the stone.
"Every spring the road eats a bit more," she said, without looking up. "So I put something on the wall that won't be there tomorrow." He asked her why the red. She said the sun went down red over the flats, and she wanted something to point at when it did. He changed the tyre while she worked, and when he looked again the outermost ring had sprouted fine dots, like frost on a windscreen.
When he left she pressed a tin of peaches on him for the fare and nodded at his mirror. The flower was already fading at the edges in the heat, but the red points stayed sharp. He drove east with the tin on the seat beside him, watching for that small flash of colour in the rear view until the flats swallowed the last of the sun.
