The press on Carrick Holm had been silent since the last ferry in October, so when Dora heard the first heavy thump of it at midnight she knew her brother had lied about the mainland. She pulled her boots on over bare feet and followed the lamplight across the wet cobbles to the boathouse, where Tom stood at the bench with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, feeding paper through the rollers.

The notes came off the plates warm and crisp, bundled and tied with tarred string. Flames had been engraved along the border of every plate, curling around the looping letters in the centre, the initials of a card syndicate that had folded before either of them was born. In the corner of the last plate someone had cut a small diamond, no bigger than a grain of rice. Dora knew that mark. It was scratched into the lintel of the chapel and on the lid of the box where her mother kept the deeds.

'Harbourmaster's paid,' Tom said, not looking up. 'Four months on the cottage and the boat licence, clear. Nobody on this rock gets hurt by it.'

She picked up a bundle and weighed it in her palm. It felt like nothing, the way the sea felt like nothing until it took your legs. She carried it to the stove, opened the door, and laid one note across the coals. The flames climbed the green paper and ate the lettering first, then the stern face of the dead man in the portrait, until only the diamond was left, glowing on the ash like something that refused to burn.

Behind her Tom said nothing. Outside, the tide was turning over the slipway, and she could hear it sliding back toward the mainland, taking the lamps with it.
