A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had logged eleven umbrellas and a single child's wellington by the time the man reached the hatch at Carrow Junction, asking whether anyone had handed in a brass compass. He described it well: the lid worn to a dull shine, a hairline crack across the glass like a dropped comma. She knew it before he finished. It had been sitting on her shelf since Tuesday, wrapped in a bus timetable.

"My father carried it on the Settle line for forty years," he said, turning his cap in his hands. "Never once pointed him wrong." She opened the lid for him. Inside, someone had scratched a line in careful cursive: If you never get lost, then you never get found. "He cut that in the week he retired," the man said. "Said it was a dare. He never did get lost, not really. He just stopped going anywhere new."

Ruth filled in the form, asking for a name, a date, a description she already had. When she set the compass flat on the counter to check the dial, the needle trembled, swung past north, and settled on the stairs to Platform Four, where the last northbound was already breathing steam into the roof. The man looked at it for a long moment. "Well," he said. "Looks like it knows the way."

She slid it across the counter and closed the lid over the scratched words. "Then you'd better go and see where it's taking you."
