Red and yellow rose tattoo design

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A single rose drawn as a tattoo design, with layered red petals whose edges are highlighted in flame-like yellow and orange swirls. Black outlines and shading define the petals, and the central bloom curls inward in a symmetrical shape. The design is shown in full colour against a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain has stopped by the time you reach the chapel door, and the rose is already climbing the north wall where nobody planted it. You were told the Harrowgate roses died with the old countess, and that the gardeners were turned off the winter the east wing burned. Yet here it is, red as a coal left in the grate, its petals heavy with water and edged in a yellow that catches the lantern light as if it is burning from the inside out.

Your brother wants the stone cleared before the sale. The surveyor has chalked a cross on the chapel floor, and the men have already prised two flagstones from the nave. You kneel beside the rose with your gloves off and tug at the stem, half expecting the thorns to bite, but they are soft as wet paper, and the stem comes away with a sound like a breath let go. Beneath it, where the roots wind through the rubble, sits a tin biscuit box wrapped in oilcloth.

Inside is a letter in the countess's looping hand. She writes that she set the east wing alight herself to burn the ledgers, that the village paid for her debts for forty years, and that she planted the rose over the grave of the one servant who refused to lie for her. The last line reads: the flame is only on the outside, the heart was always cold. You read it twice, then fold it back into the oilcloth.

You carry the stem down the hill with the letter tucked beside it, past the surveyor's chalk already washing away in the rain. At the lych gate you press the stem into the wet earth beside the old bench. Your brother can have his sale. By morning two new buds have pushed through the soil, each one edged in that same bright yellow, as though the fire has only been waiting for someone to notice it.
