Small fern sprig tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black sprig or fern-like branch with angled side strokes is tattooed on the inside of a wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown against lightly toned skin. The hand is raised at the top of the frame, with a pale bedsheet filling the background.

The officer at Dover had already turned the tin over twice when Marta asked whether the fern would survive the drive north. He didn't answer. He held the cutting up to the strip light, its three pale roots wrapped in damp kitchen paper, and frowned at the label her grandmother had written in pencil: Ashgrove, 1961, do not let it dry.

"Plant material," he said, the way people read out a word they had never heard before.
Marta had carried it through two countries in her coat pocket. Her grandmother had taken it from a stone wall above a lough, a single sprig pressed into a letter, and kept it alive in a jam jar on a windowsill for sixty years. It had grown into a green fountain that spilled over the sill and outlasted the house. When the house was sold, the cutting had to go somewhere, and Marta was the only one who still knew how to keep it damp.
The officer slid a form across the counter. She filled in the box for origin with the name of a village that no longer had a shop. Then he sealed the tin in a clear bag, wrote a number on it, and said she could collect it from the far desk once the inspector had signed. She waited among the lorry drivers, thinking about the wall and the water.
When the bag came back to her it was warm from the lamp. Inside the tin, a single new frond had uncurled overnight, pale as a fingernail. The officer tapped the lid with one knuckle and said, "Well, it's still breathing." Marta kept the tin in her lap all the way to the car.
