Bare tree tattoo at the base of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small black silhouette of a leafless tree with thin, spreading branches sits at the base of the neck, below the hairline. The linework is crisp and the ink is solid black with no visible shading. The photograph is taken from behind on a pale, sandy background, with the wearer's hair tied up and a grey jumper slipping off one shoulder.

The circus had shrunk to four wagons, a lame grey pony and a tent patched so often it was mostly patches, and Nell Dacey had stopped counting how many winters they had spent on Cutler's Field beneath the one bare ash at its far corner. Now a letter from the landowner lay on the caravan step, weighted with a cold cup of tea, and the word developers was underlined twice in somebody else's pen.

Her father would not read it. Tobias sat in the doorway of the ring wagon stitching a harness with the same patient knots he had used since before Nell was born, and talked about the spring season as though the roads were still full of people who wanted to be astonished. 'We'll be in Carlisle by April,' he said. 'The horses know the way.'

That night she climbed the ash in the dark, as she had when she was small, and fixed the old pulley to the highest fork, where the branches spread like fingers held up against frost. The wind came off the moor and the whole tree groaned. Below her the caravan lamps went out one by one. She felt foolish, then stopped feeling anything except the cold in her palms.

At first light she walked the wire, slack and humming, from the ash to the gatepost and back, with nobody to watch but the crows and the man from the council, who had come early to measure the field. He stood at the gate with his clipboard and, for once, wrote nothing down. She stepped off at the end and bowed. When he left, he took the long way round the tree.
