Branching tree on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black ink tattoo of a bare, branching tree sits on the inner wrist, with fine, sketchy lines fanning out from a dark base at the upper right. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The photo is taken in warm sunlight against a soft, speckled fabric, with the tattoo centred and a beaded bracelet on the forearm beside it.

Dorothea from the water office wanted to burn it for the stove, and I told her no, not until I had counted it. I have counted it every winter since you left, the way my mother counted hens. Two hundred and nine tips this year, down from two hundred and thirty-one the year the sluice failed. We cut the trunk into rounds and laid them out on trestles in the church hall, and the grain ran in tight rings that Dorothea traced with one finger while she talked about her husband's hands.
In the heart of the third round we found a tin box no bigger than a matchbox, soldered shut, and inside it a slip of paper gone the colour of weak tea. It said only: Take one for every one you cut. I do not know who wrote it or what they meant by one. I have decided it means you, Tobias, and the bundle of cuttings wrapped in damp linen in the tin I am posting with this.
Keep it out of direct sun and say nothing to it for a month. They do not like being rushed. When the first bud comes it will look like nothing much, a dark knot at the base where the wood starts to decide. Write and tell me which way it leans.
